New Mexico Rural Housing Summit

The Center for Housing Economics is working with Representative Anita Gonzalez on a Legislative Rural Housing Summit on Friday, November 13th, 2026 in Las Vegas, New Mexico at Highlands University. Planning is still underway. The idea for a summit came together during a conversation with Representative Gonzalez about rural housing needs. As we’ve traveled the state, the need for a gathering became more clear. As we visited rural communities all over New Mexico to discuss housing, we found demand for housing but no economic incentive to build because of high costs for labor and infrastructure. This result is low vacancy rates, higher prices and rents, and an increasing number of homes and buildings falling into disrepair.
